Quality Assurance

Professional Registration & Accreditation

All of our Perfusionists are accredited and registered with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland. The College is a UK charitable organisation responsible for setting and monitoring perfusion standards for both individual practitioners and institutions across the United Kingdom.

Clinical perfusion accreditation and quality standards documentation

The College's register ensures that all practising perfusionists have completed an approved training programme, demonstrated clinical competence, and continue to meet ongoing professional standards. Institutional accreditation provides assurance to hospitals, surgeons, and patients that the perfusion service meets nationally recognised standards of safety, governance, and clinical practice.

Continuing Professional Development

The Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland works alongside the College and focuses upon the advancement of perfusion technology and clinical practice. Our staff regularly attend CPD lectures, conferences, and workshops hosted by the Society and other organisations — including the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) and the American Academy of Cardiovascular Perfusion (AmSECT) — in order to keep up to date with the latest developments in perfusion science.

As part of the College's requirements, individual perfusionists are monitored on a three-yearly re-accreditation cycle. To achieve re-accreditation, each perfusionist must demonstrate:

  • A minimum of 15 academic CPD points — earned through lectures, publications, teaching, and conference attendance
  • A minimum of 40 cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) cases within the 3-year period
  • Evidence of reflective practice, audit participation, and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures

Clinical Governance & Safety

MPP operates within a robust clinical governance framework. We maintain comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all perfusion activities, which are reviewed and updated regularly. These cover routine bypass management, emergency protocols (including oxygenator failure, massive air embolism, and power loss), equipment maintenance schedules, and quality control processes.

All critical incidents and near-misses are reported, investigated, and fed back into our continuous improvement process. We participate in regular clinical audit — including benchmarking our outcomes against national data from the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) and the National Adult Cardiac Surgery Audit (NACSA). This data-driven approach ensures that our practice remains evidence-based and continuously improving.

All perfusion equipment undergoes regular planned preventative maintenance and testing by accredited service engineers. Equipment logs, calibration records, and service histories are maintained in full compliance with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) guidance. Our heart-lung machines, cell salvage devices, and monitoring equipment are serviced to manufacturer specifications and inspected before every clinical use.
