About Us
Our Story
Manchester Perfusion Practice (MPP), originally named North West Perfusion, was formed in 1989 by Mr M Lynn and Mr JB Godwin. Over the past three decades the company has expanded and developed into one of the most established independent perfusion providers in the United Kingdom.
Today, MPP consists of a highly trained perfusion team who provide a comprehensive perfusion service across several NHS and private hospital sites.
The company was founded at a time when cardiac surgery in the UK was undergoing rapid growth. The first successful open-heart operation using cardiopulmonary bypass in the UK was performed in 1958, and by the late 1980s the demand for dedicated perfusion services had outpaced NHS capacity. MPP was established to meet this demand, initially providing perfusion services exclusively to Manchester Royal Infirmary — one of the largest adult cardiac surgical centres in the North West of England, performing approximately 1,000 cardiac operations per year.
The perfusion team supply 24-hour on-call coverage, 365 days a year, for all contracted services. In over 30 years of existence, MPP have never had to cancel a cardiac case because of a failure to provide a perfusionist. This unbroken record of reliability is a source of immense pride and reflects the dedication and professionalism of every member of our team. Alongside the accredited Clinical Perfusion Scientists are numerous perfusion assistants and dedicated administrative support offered by our team based in Bramhall, Cheshire.
Key Milestones
Founded as North West Perfusion by Mr M Lynn and Mr JB Godwin
ICS introduced alongside cardiac perfusion at CMFT
Rebranded to MPP; expanded to BMI Alexandra Hospital
Haemoclaim formed; UK's only accredited ICS course launched
100+ years combined experience; multi-site 24/7 coverage nationwide
Intraoperative Cell Salvage
In addition to cardiac perfusion services, MPP offer Intraoperative Cell Salvage (ICS) — a technique where a patient's own blood is collected during surgery, washed, and returned to them. ICS was introduced during the 1980s at the Central Manchester Foundation Trust (CMFT) and was originally offered during cardiac operations to provide patients with autologous blood and minimise the need for donor transfusions. The service was so successful that CMFT (now part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust) now accompanies every cardiac operation with ICS.
The use of ICS has grown substantially across multiple surgical disciplines. It is now routinely used in Obstetrics, Trauma, Orthopaedics, Vascular surgery, and Urology, among others. This growth is supported by NICE guidelines, which recommend cell salvage as part of Patient Blood Management strategies. The National Blood Transfusion Committee and the Association of Anaesthetists also endorse its use as a way to reduce dependence on donor blood, improve clinical outcomes, and reduce costs for NHS Trusts.
Haemoclaim Blood Management Service
With the increased demand for ICS, MPP formed Haemoclaim Blood Management Service. Haemoclaim has developed a comprehensive, bespoke Cell Salvage Training Course — the only recognised course of its kind in the UK — accredited by The College of Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland. The course provides candidates with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to deliver ICS to the highest clinical standards.
Haemoclaim also provides consultancy, support, and training for hospitals wishing to establish their own cell salvage service. This includes equipment procurement, protocol development, staff training, and assistance with clinical governance frameworks. Our expertise has been sought by hospitals across the UK, and we have helped advise institutions including the Cleveland Clinic London and BMI The Park Hospital in Nottingham.
It is our mission to continue providing an excellent clinical service for many years to come — delivering safe, effective perfusion and cell salvage services that improve patient outcomes and support the wider goals of Patient Blood Management across the NHS.
