Our Services
Cardiac Perfusion Services
MPP provide the cardiac perfusion service to Manchester Royal Infirmary and the BMI Alexandra Hospital, together with a 24/7 on-call cell salvage service to both hospitals. We also provide an elective cell salvage service to NHS trusts and private hospitals throughout the North West of England.
Cardiac perfusion — also known as cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) — is essential for the majority of open-heart operations. During these procedures, the perfusionist operates the heart-lung machine, which temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs.

24/7 Emergency On-Call
This allows the cardiac surgeon to operate on a still, bloodless heart while the patient's circulation and gas exchange are maintained artificially. Our perfusionists manage blood flow, oxygenation, temperature regulation, haemofiltration, and the delivery of cardioplegia solutions throughout each case.
At Manchester Royal Infirmary, our team supports approximately 1,000 cardiac operations per year, covering the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG), valve replacements and repairs, aortic root and arch surgery, heart and lung transplants, ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation, and both VA-ECMO and VV-ECMO support.
Setting Up a Perfusion Department
Alongside the provision of full or part-time staffing for perfusion departments, MPP can establish a complete perfusion service within a hospital from the ground up. This turnkey service provides the expert guidance required to enable a hospital to set up and run a successful, fully compliant perfusion department — saving significant time, cost, and administrative burden.
What we provide includes:
- The supply and maintenance of perfusion hardware — including heart-lung machines, heater-cooler units, and monitoring equipment
- Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) — written to meet College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists standards and hospital governance requirements
- Safety protocols and emergency procedures — covering oxygenator failure, power loss, air embolism management, and equipment malfunction
- Risk assessments — comprehensive clinical risk documentation for CQC and Trust governance teams
- Assistance with accreditation — guiding departments through the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists accreditation process for institutional recognition
- Supply of disposable equipment — complete bypass circuits, cannulae, oxygenators, cardioplegia sets, and arterial line filters
- Staff recruitment and training support — helping hospitals recruit, train, and retain qualified perfusionists
Our longstanding relationships within the cardiac surgery industry and our ability to bulk-purchase equipment enables us to tailor this service to each hospital's needs at a highly competitive price. This not only saves Trusts time but also money and resources. We have helped advise the Cleveland Clinic, London, and the most recent service to be established was at BMI The Park Hospital in Nottingham.
Cell Salvage & Blood Management
Through our Haemoclaim Blood Management Service, we provide intraoperative cell salvage (ICS) across a wide range of surgical specialities. ICS involves collecting a patient's own blood lost during surgery, washing it via centrifugation, and reinfusing the concentrated red blood cells back to the patient. This autologous blood product eliminates the risks associated with donor blood transfusion — including transfusion reactions, disease transmission, and immunosuppression.
Cell salvage is recommended by NICE, the Association of Anaesthetists, and the National Blood Transfusion Committee as a key component of Patient Blood Management. It is widely used in vascular surgery, orthopaedics, trauma, obstetrics, urology, and liver surgery. Our team provides 24/7 emergency on-call ICS at contracted hospitals, as well as elective booking-based services for private hospitals and other NHS Trusts across the North West.
